Pacific Grove Update

Prelogue: I had a fundraiser for my Pac Grove Account this past weekend proceeding a sprint triathlon in Carlsbad, CA. the following email ensued, hope you enjoy it...

okay, so besides feeling like a MAC truck not only ran me over, but actually backed up and then proceeded to run me over again, I have to apologize for the lateness of this heartfelt hello...

1st off, can i just start with saying you are all so fantastic and I can not thank you enough for coming out to support our fundraiser yesterday, many of you treking it down after the surprisingly brutal Carlsbad tri (more to come on that subject in a moment!)!!!!! I feel so blessed that you all came and had a fun time and won lots of cool prizes, some of you more than others (TREY!). A VERY VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO MY AWESOME ROOMMATES WHO PICKED UP ALL THE BURRITOS AND SET MOST OF THE FOOD UP FOR YOU GUYS bc, of course, i was running late due to my triathlon excursion. I love you Tonice and Jared! All in all, it was a great turnout and I have to say, my Wildflower team represented hardcore! I LOVE YOU GUYS! (John, I forgive your absence but you won't get off so easy next time!). The Pacific Grove team showed some serious numbers as well, and it really meant alot that you took the time (and money) to come out. YOU ARE THE BEST! :)

okay now on to my advice for all you first timers and a little reminder for you veterans. Sam was soooooo right on his NNORD advice and i, although I swear I abided by this advice for Wildflower, decided to give it leeway for Carlsbad. BAD IDEA! So, close your eyes, well that won't work bc clsoing your eyes would mean you couldnt read this, but visualize with me...

I wake up to some major gastrointestinal distress (Alexis, I hope your doing better!). So i decided after much thought, to have something a bit more solid for breakfast so it had less chance of going through me as quickly. So, instead of my regular, tride and true race day eggs, oatmeal cheese and sausage (oh and half an apple), i decided to eat cherries and a pastrami sandwich ( i know Tara, i know!). Keep this in mind for later...now bc i didnt pack the night before bc I was trying to do last minute fundraising stuff, i still had to pack putting me in a tizzy and running a little behind to the race...

As i watched Lamine's wave go off, I saw ginormous waves come crashing down on the swimmers and my stomach decided to remind me that it was not happy. Luckily, I remembered coach's advice and asked about the current, took it into consideration, and off i went into the waves of death, headed for the buoys. I got into a rythm and remembered all the things coach had reemed me about the week prior (apparently I don't really know how to swim!) and actually started to pass other competitiors. Good swim and I was ready to move on...

mounting my bike in literally a 10 ft space from the mount/dismount line to the begining of the hill, i could not for the life of me clip in. So, of course, I run into the curb and plop over to the side, covering myself in dirt, and emerging like a sandman in the Saharra. I must take credit, it was a graceful fall, very artful if i do say. so I finally clip in, wave to my laughing fans, and power up the hill. Here is where my breakfast came into play. About half way through, it decided to say hello...to everyone else. So. i'm picturing Sam yelling NNORD!!!! as i'm throwing up, not once, no that would be too simple, twice. yeah, i'm a rockstar...

finally, I started the run, feeling like crap, well, worse, but whose keeping track at this point, to see Cassie finishing her race (you are such a superstar!). The run was brutally hot, but I did pour lots of water on my head. i was exhausted and this was only a freakin' sprint!

SO, GUT CHECK:
1) NNORD (nothing new on race day, newbies!)
2) pack the night before
3) don't forget where you are and watch where youre going
4) if you do fall, do it gracefully :)
5) PLEASE PLEAS PLEASE get those endurance building runs in, it was a rude awakening how unfit i was on the run
6) and finally, have awesome teammates there to hug you at the end and tell you what a bad ass you are even when you sucked it up! (ok, you already have that in the bag!)

Hope you enjoyed my little recap, i know it was long, i get carried away :) Thanks for all the advice and coaching Coach. I can't imagine how I would have done without your guidance, I may have just had a meltdown! You guys, if i havent said it before, ROCK! whether a Pac Grover, a Wildchild, Lavaman or just a supporter, you are all truly amazing people and I thank you for sharing yourselves with me.

luv, katie

Its done and I couldn't be happier

Well hello all of my wonderful sponsors! I know that this final update is WAY over due, but better late than never, right?!?

Wildflower ended up being the best thing I have done/accomplished in my adult life thus far. I don't even have the words to describe to you how fulfilling, wonderful and absolutely breathtaking the entire event weekend turned out to be.

As all of you know, I decided to train for this event in honor of my brother Clark, doing something that carried on his spirit of helping others and then too for Josh Beierman, who was diagnosed with lung cancer late last year. As the race got closer, my emotions began to take over and I just thanked God that I had gotten so far with so much support from each of you. The night before my team left for the race, my mom called me with the news that Josh had joined the elite in Heaven. Feeling terrible and lost that another life was gone from our small little town of close knit families, I left for the race, I had, afterall, been training this whole time to honor the two of them, and I felt that I had to finish what I had started because it was from the heart.

The people, the lake, the campgrounds...everything was perfect, all in all, an amazing backdrop to an event that tested every part of my being. I finished the race accomplishing both of my goals of not having to stop and walk at any part of the race and finishing under 3 hours and 30 minutes! I truly felt that I was running with wings on the final descent from Lynch Hill (they always name the really bad ones, don't they?) and my sprint into the shoot. I basically kicked some serious butt and all the way I thought how blessed I was to have the ability to accomplish such a fantastic feat of strength, endurance and spirit.

Of course, in true spirit of the Brunner clan and the TNT tradition, I partied it up that night in celebration of the end of something that really kept me going for the past 3 months. As I had my wine by the team bonfire and we all told our stories, I shared my sadness, my losses and my peace with those who now know me better than I had ever intended. I don't know what I would have done without the goal to finish and the purpose to raise money for such and incredible cause and I wanted to thank each of you again for your prayers, encouragement and very generous donations. My final tally for the season was $2900, $200 over my goal, and 75% of all of that went to cancer research (the other 25% went to actually getting my little butt to the starting line!)!

Thank you a million times over because I never would have been able to do it without you! I have taken on another event; it gives me purpose and perspective for a life that still isn't completely settled. I'll be doing the Pacific Grove Triathlon in Sept. of 06 (hopefully I'll be able to persuade my own personal cheer station to come out and see me complete another: THANK YOU ETHAN, KYLE, AUNT JUDY AND UNCLE HENRY!!!) You all mean so much to me and I thank you from the most genuine part of me.

Here are some pics from the race, hope you enjoy checking them out.

If any of you are interested in doing a TNT event (they have marathons, 1/2 marathons, century rides, a hike team and of course triathlons) and want any info, I would be more than happy to guide you and help in anyway I can. Since starting my new season, I have already made the advanced run and swim team and the coach has already asked me to be a mentor (NO FUNDRAISING FOR ME...WHEW, its hard!!!!!) for the Lavaman season (the race is in Hawaii in April 07!!!). SO, if it interests you, you could train wherever you are and we could all hang out on the beautiful island together!

love always, your favorite triathlete katie

Training Update #3: 3 weeks and counting...

well, this is the last time you'll be hearing from me until after the triathlon when I write to tell you how awesome it was to finish! but before that can happen, i still have to raise $700 to participate. thank you so much for those of you who have already donated and the ones who haven't...well here's your opportunity and i hope a little inspiration to get you going! please please please don't let all my intensely hard training go to waste...137 miles biked, 24 miles swam, and approximatley 65 miles ran since i started training 3 months ago!

i've had the pleasure of meeting (and persuading) an extremely talented individual who took the time to help me put together an amazing new website to better inform everyone of my inspirations, training and a general thanks to everyone who has donated so far. http://www.triforangels.com/ i came up with the name (all by my lonesome): TRI as in triathlon, FOR ANGELS bc every single person i am training for and every single person i think of while i am training are my angels and i cherish them with all my heart. i hope you all enjoy checking it out! let me know what you think!!!!

this past weekend was amazing. i have been having a really hard time with the ocean swim bc, well, i get motion sickness. so after every swim i masochistically put myself through bc i know i need the training, i run out of the ocean, usually to make it just in time to the trash can the coaches have to loving set up for me, and puke my brains out. all in all, it is a terrible time and i dread it with a passion, until this past weekend when i found an herbal motion potion and I WAS NOT SICK!!!!! i had an amazing swim, the sun was shining, the water was a warmer 58 degrees (2 degrees warmer than last weekend) and i could actually see to the bottom of the ocean the entire time! i was in complete awe of what God had put in front of me and can not even begin to comment of the grandeur i experienced. i wish i had a camera, but know i took you all with me the entire time and sent you all a small prayer so that you could enjoy it in your dreams :) all of this happening of course after our 10 mile morning endurance run we have at 10 to follow with the 1:00 swim. good times, good time.

so if that hasn't inspired you, here's one more thing to think about...why not donate just $25 if that's all you can afford. maybe you're $25, $50, $100, $250 donation just might be the dollar that runs the research lab for the day that the scientists stay late to find the one missing piece in the equation that cures one strand of luekemia, lymphoma or myloma and saves the lives of millions you don't know and maybe the one life you do know that means the world to you. maybe you aren't directly affected by any of these cancers at this exact moment, but it just might happen someday and your donation might just be the dollar that keeps the lab lights on, that finds the cure that otherwise wouldn't be found if the electricity were shut off. this means so much to me and i need your help. i have 3 weeks to raise the rest of the $700 and i cannot do it alone.

http://www.triforangels.com/

please feel free to cut and paste this update in anyway you feel necessary and send it to everyone you know. i have been truly amazed by the people who have and who haven't donated and you never know who will want to help out, so why not atleast give them the chance? i only know so many people, but with everyone's help, i can meet the goal and finish this race. thank you all for your support so far and please keep me in your prayers in this final training and fundraising phase.

love, katie, kat, katrina...

ps. if you have any inspiration or just a well wish, please send it to me. body is tired and i am in need of encouraging words. it means a lot to hear form you guys, no matter how short

Training Update #2

well hello everyone,

I thought I'd write you all a quick update straight off a great day's training. We did Torrey Pines Hill repeats today, consisting of 4 repeats of a pretty steep 2.5 mile climb and 2.5 mile descend. It was one of our most challenging sessions to date, but so rewarding to have made the accomplishment. Oh and GREAT news, I didn't fall once!!!! So that's super exciting for me (and my knee!). Last Sunday we had our toughest running session, the Lake Penesquitos Canyon run, where I honestly thought I was going to have to be life-flighted out of the mountains I was so beat! But luckily, I had my team there to help push me through and the thoughts of Clark and Josh helped a lot as well!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!! to everyone who has donated so far. I am HALF WAY THERE and only have $1157 to go out of the $2700 and I am so very grateful that you all have believed in me enough to show your support through your generous donations. I have even earned enough to get my (much needed) wetsuit for our first open water ocean swim this weekend!!!...

This week's training schedule:
MONDAY: Rest day

TUESDAY: Swim on your own (atleast 1 mi), JCC at 7:30

WEDNESDAY: This week will NOT be at track. We will be meeting at Cane’s in PB for a long “fartlek” run as a team. (oh brings me back to the days of soccer...)

THURSDAY: Swim at JCC as usual for coached swim and building drills

FRIDAY: Bike easy 22 miles.

SATURDAY: BRICK WORKOUT #2: ride from Solana Beach, through Rancho Santa Fe and beyond, and back. Afterwards, we will run San Elijo Lagoon; be prepared for a very long session!!!!

SUNDAY: 10 am run with Sam. Again we will be building our mileage and doing some hill work. First OCEAN SWIM is Sunday at 1:00 pm. This tends to be a long session, as we have a lot to cover regarding use of wetsuits, safety, open water swimming, and oh yeah, the actual workout. (i'm so nervous, I need lots of prayers so the sharks stay very far away from me!!!)

So, this week is gonna be a tough one and I am really getting good at preparing myself mentally for each session and my endurance and skill is improving in leaps with each practice. I feel very blessed that I have all of you to share this with and glad that you all care so much. Please remember to pass this along to anyone who you think might enjoy it. Let me know if you have any fundraising ideas for me as well and of course PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep me in your thoughts and prayers. Your encouragement helps so very much, even if its just a few short words or small donation. Every bit of each of you helps me to get through this journey...

love you

I am up to $660 and I earned my cycling race jersey!!!!! I got to wear it this weekend for our first big ride and I felt so proud so thank you all again so very very much for your generosity! I still have quite a way to go, but I know it will happen :) Training is going very well; I finally purchased my road bike (that was a very pretty penny, but I absolutely love it and was well worth the money!) and have only fallen off a total of 3 times. I know, I know, I just get comfortable on the dadgum thing and then forget to unclip both feet when I stop, then - plop...over I tumble! At least I am at a stand still when this happens or I might not make it through the rest of the season! :) Here's a look at this week's training so you all know what I am doing to prepare for this monster:

Sunday: 10 AM run at Mission Bay as usual. Be sure you are working on your “base-building.”

Monday: Rest day. Eat something you really like!

Tuesday: 7:30 pm Open Swim at JCC. Work on drills, stroke form, endurance.

Wednesday: 6:00 pm track. As for this week. "Pyramid" workout. We will run 1200m, then 800m, then 400m, then 400m, 800m, and finally 1200m with the regular 1 mile warm up and 1 mile cool down

Thursday: 7:30 pm Coached Swim

Friday: Minimum bike distance 18 miles, or spinclass.

Saturday: Brick workout… this means Bike AND Run. We will be working on this difficult aspect of triathlon…running after you have been biking. It isn’t easy, but it gets better with practice.

Sunday March 5: NEW LOCATION FOR RUN: WEST END OFPENASQUITOS CANYON. This is a very hilly run and will definately work you!

So that's it for the update, I guess it didnt turn out to be quite so short, but thanks for reading, and remember, I still need all of your support in phone calls, well wishes, and most importantly donations so that I can actually participate in the race! YOU ARE ALL WONDERFUL.

love you, katrina, trina, katie, kate, kat...

Hello John and Tom,

This past year has been a tough one; my little brother Clark was killed this past June, unselfishly saving the life of another. I have had an extremely hard time getting through this, especially being so far away from my parents so I decided to do something productive with my self and help to save the lives of others too, in whatever capacity I could, in honor of Clark.
I joined an organization by the name of Team in Training. We are training as a group for the Jamba Juice Wildflower Triathlon in Lake San Antonio, CA May 7, 2006. It is an Olympic distance triathlon, which includes a 1-mile swim, 25-mile bike and a 7-mile run. I am sore to say the least, but those who have to endure chemotherapy have a hard time just doing daily activities.

Team in Training, which raises money to fund cancer research, supports triathlons, century rides and marathons along with fundraising efforts to challenge an individual in every aspect:; mentally, physically, emotionally and as I am finding, financially (3 sports can get expensive!). I am blessed to have the energy and aptitude to train for this cause, pushing myself past my comfort zone in life, striving to do something bigger than myself.

Cancer has become such a dominating factor in today's medical world, and a bit of a prevalent occurrence in those who mean so much to me. I am training for all of those people including a very special little boy named Taichi, our team's child in remission and everyone else who has encountered any form of the disease. But as you all know, it can be overcome with strength, love and the help of doctors and scientists who give their life's work to save the lives of others.
My goal for this season's Wildflower Triathlon is to raise $2700 for cancer research and do my part to help save others. I think Clark would be proud of this and hope you all are too. If you know of anyone who would like to donate to this amazing cause and help me to successfully get to Wildflower in honor of these people, please go to https://www.active.com/donate/tntsdh/tntkbrunner and donate. Every little bit, no matter how small, helps. Many corporations do donation matching for these causes so be sure to inquire with your company. If they want to make a “corporate donation” of $500 or more, I will put their name on my competition jerseys in thanks, so everyone is aware that they made a generous donation in the fight for saving those affected by cancer! I will also be able to post their names on my website so that everyone who visits my sites will be able to see the generosity as well. Also, please keep in mind that THIS IS TAX DEDUCTABLE!! The site automatically sets your donation up in the manner necessary to get the tax credit. If you do not want to use the Internet to donate, you can send me a check made payable to Team in Training.

I encourage you to forward this letter to anyone you believe would like to donate to the cause and sponsor me as well. I thank you so very much for your time and care.

Lots to tell you :)

Hello everyone!!!!!

Well, if you haven't heard from me lately its because I have been extremely busy here in sunny San Diego but loving it all the same. Work is good and the weather is unbelievable. I am truly blessed to be here at this point in time.

Most of you are aware that my little brother, or as he liked to say "big" brother (did the tall genes just skip me?!), Clark was killed this past June, unselfishly saving the life of another. I have had an extremely hard time getting through this, especially being so far away from my parents. I decided to do something productive with my grief and help to save the lives of others too, in honor of Clark.

Team in Training, which raises money to fund cancer research, supports triathlons, century rides and marathons along with fundraising efforts to challenge an individual in every aspect: mentally, physially, emotionally and as I am finding financially (3 sports can get expensive). I am blessed to have the energy and aptitude to train for this cause, pushing myself past my comfort zone in life, striving to do something bigger than myself.

Cancer has become such a dominating factor in today's medical world, and a bit of a prevelant occurance in those who mean so much to me. I am training for all of those people: Aunt Cathy, Grandma Claire, Papa Ed, Josh Bieirman, KJ's mom, Taichi (our team's child in remission), Michelle (our team's honored teammate) and everyone else who had encountered any form of the disease.

Every little bit, no matter how small, helps. A lot of corporations do donation matching for these causes, maybe Target or Yahoo or Verizon? If so, and they do donate $500 or more, I can put their name on my training and competition jerseys in thanks, so everyone is aware that they made a generous donation in the fight for saving those affected by cancer! I will also be able to post their names on my website so that everyone who visits my sites will be able to see the generosity as well. Also, please keep in mind that THIS IS A TAX WRITE-OFF!! The site automatically sets your donation up in the manner necessary to get the tax credit. If you do not want to use the internet to donate, you can send me a check made out to Team in Training.

Please know that any donations made are very much appreciated and not in any way expected from any of you. I just wanted you to all know what I am up to and the small positve effect I am trying to have on this huge world. If you cannot give financially, I will take all the prayers and well wishes you can muster. Hopefully you will all know someone who can help and will feel comfortable in passing this along to them. Thank you for listening. I am blessed to have the people I have in my life.
